The Earth and Stars Seen from the International Space Station

This is a fantastic compilation of the Earth and stars as seen from the International Space Station. It’s amazing the speed that the ISS passes over the Earth: at one moment you’re looking at Europe and the next you’re over China. Indeed, according to Wikipedia, the ISS has an average speed of 17,200+ miles per hour and an orbital period around Earth of 91 minutes.

The editing of the video was done by Alex Rivest, who used Adobe Lightroom to bring out the contrast in the stars. The accompanying music is “Truck out There” by London PM.

Gorgeous Timelapse of Saint Petersburg, Russia

This is a gorgeous timelapse video of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Saint Petersburg, Russia. Watch as we get numerous overhead views of the city, including a stunning fireworks display over the Neva River. For the stunning closing, we see the opening and closing of the Palace Bridge over the Neva River.

The video was shot by Andrew Efimov using Canon 7D and 5D Mark II cameras. The cut scenes are of a violin duet by Igot Zalivalov and Sofia Bridge. What a beautiful composition as a whole. Highly recommended seeing this one large.

Incredible Time Lapse Video from El Teide, Spain

I don’t usually post non-reading items on this blog. But when something as beautiful as Terje Sorgierd’s “The Mountain” comes along, I cannot resist not posting it. It’s one of the most astounding time lapse videos I have ever seen. Witness for yourself:

The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know, El Teide (the highest mountain in Spain). I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.

What is most spectacular, I think, is the way the Milky Way dances with the golden-orange sky, as evidenced at around 0:32 in the video. There was a large Sahara storm as Terje was filming, the winds of which carried the sand particles to the northern hemisphere. The result is mesmerizing.

The Unseen Sea: A Beautiful Time Lapse of San Francisco

This post has nothing to do with reading…But this time-lapse video taken in and around San Francisco is one of the most beautiful videos I have ever seen. Simon Christen, an amazing photographer, spent a year creating this video… “The Unseen Sea” is a feast for the senses.

Please take three minutes of your time and watch it. You will not be disappointed.

Beautiful. I love everything about this video, but perhaps most amazing to me is the heavenly, undulating motion of the clouds at around the 2:05 mark. And that ending? Simply sublime.
